(2020/6/11) Johnson & Johnson remains confident in the promising prospects of its long-term development in the Chinese market as coronavirus pandemic ebbs, and is looking forward to more like-minded talent participating in its employer brand launched in Shanghai last year, a human resources head from the leading global healthcare company said in an interview with the Global Times.

"China is a critical market in Johnson & Johnson's global portfolio. It is not only our No1 growth engine but is also evolving to become a global hub for innovation," Alex Kopitsas, head of human resources for Johnson & Johnson China, told the Global Times in a recent interview.

Johnson & Johnson was one of the first multinational healthcare companies to enter China. The year 2020 marks the 35th anniversary of Johnson & Johnson's operations in China. Headquartered in New Brunswick, New Jersey in the US, the firm has over 260 operating companies in 60 countries and regions, with over 130,000 employees worldwide. Its worldwide sales reached $82.1 billion in 2019.

35 years on, having introduced all of its businesses to China, the company has also established research and development (R&D) and innovation capabilities in one of the world's largest markets across all its business sectors. Johnson & Johnson is also investing to build up an open innovation ecosystem to connect business partners and key stakeholders, and contribute to the development of Healthy China.

In 2014, Johnson & Johnson opened the Asia Pacific Innovation Center in Shanghai, now one of the four Johnson & Johnson Innovation Centers in life sciences hotspots around the globe. In 2019, it established the China Lung Cancer Initiative to help address unmet needs in the field. It also launched JLABS @ Shanghai, the Asia Pacific region's first and the world's largest Johnson & Johnson innovation incubator. In October 2019, it announced it would position China as a global Innovation Powerhouse, with a series of innovative initiatives and partnerships across all business sectors introduced.

Stressing the company's confidence in the Chinese market in the long run, Kopitsas said, "We believe after the pandemic, people will have higher demand for high-quality healthcare products and solutions, the industry will speed up digital transformation to empower day-to-day operation and support business development, and healthcare reform will be further deepened to support the public health agenda."

China's job market has attracted abundant top talent including many returning from overseas, Kopitsas said, adding that in an effort to attract the top talent, it launched its employer brand in Shanghai in November 2019.

Anchoring on the pillars of "Talent, Innovation and Impact," the company's employer brand demonstrates how Johnson & Johnson is fully supportive of talent development and aims to attract top talent to profoundly change the trajectory of health for humanity.

On May 20, Johnson & Johnson China's employer brand event "Let's Date" was held in its Shanghai and Beijing offices, engaging with 11,000 employees through onsite activities and virtual connections to further promote the core values of the brand within the company community.

"We are pleased to see the event was well received among our employees, as well as by our external stakeholders. It is also a strong testament of how Johnson & Johnson remains committed to talent development in the market. With that, we expect to see more like-minded talent joining us in all our business sectors of Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals and Consumer Health, as well as cross-sector functions such as [those related to] R&D, Global External Innovation and Supply Chain," said Kopitsas.

When the company introduced its employer brand in China in 2019, it also launched the Johnson & Johnson China page on LinkedIn. In addition to the Johnson & Johnson global LinkedIn page, "the platform also gives us a unique channel to engage with local talent and share what we are doing here in China," said Kopitsas.

"Through the partnership with LinkedIn, we are able to reach out to a huge number of professionals on LinkedIn's network, sharing our achievements and stories in China and beyond, and helping potential candidates have a better idea of what it is like to work at J&J," the executive said.
